Are debit cards safe?

Yes, debit cards are safe. But that doesn’t mean they’re immune to fraud. M&T Bank goes to tremendous lengths to protect our customers. Security protocols are incredibly extensive and updated constantly. But today’s scammers are extremely sophisticated, and their methods are ever evolving. It’s an ongoing cat-and-mouse game.

That’s why it’s important that you, as a consumer, take recommended precautions to provide an additional layer of protection against fraudulent charges on your debit cards.

Remember these basic but effective tips:

Never lend your debit card to anyone.

Don’t write your PIN on your card or anywhere near your card.

When checking out in a public location, shield your card number so that it can’t be copied or photographed.

Review your monthly statement to find any unfamiliar transactions.

Fraud prevention

Your M&T debit card has a three-digit security code on the back that helps verify that you’re in possession of the card at the time of any transactions. Also, Visa Secure helps confirm your identity when shopping online. Contactless and chip technologies help protect you with every transaction by encrypting card information into a unique code. And if you misplace your M&T card, you can temporarily lock it to prevent any transactions.
