M&T QuickBooks® Conversion
Step by step instructions to help you transition your QuickBooks® account.
As you start preparing to use M&T digital services, you will need to modify your QuickBooks® settings to ensure the smooth transition of your data.
Please reference the dates next to each task as this information is time sensitive and keep in mind that beginning Saturday, September 3, 2022, M&T Mobile and Online services will be unavailable for 36 hours as we complete our systems integration.
To complete these instructions, you will need your login credentials for online banking and/or Direct Connect. For any questions, please visit M&T Online & Mobile Banking FAQs.
You should perform the following instructions exactly as described and, in the order, presented. If you do not, your online banking connectivity may stop functioning properly.
This conversion should take 15-30 minutes. Please select the instruction below that best relates to your needs for further instructions.
QuickBooks® Desktop Windows Direct Connect
Before Disconnecting and Converting:
1. Backup QuickBooks® Windows Data File & Update
a. Choose File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup
b. Download the latest QuickBooks® Update. Go to Help > Update QuickBooks® Desktop
c. Accept all new transactions into the appropriate registers (required)
On or After Tuesday, September 6:
1. Deactivate online banking connection for accounts connected to People’s United
a. Choose Lists menu > Chart of Accounts
b. Right-click on the first account you would like to deactivate and choose Edit Account
c. Click the Bank Feeds Settings tab in the Edit Account window
d. Select Deactivate All Online Services and click Save & Close
e. Click OK for any alerts or messages that may appear with the deactivation
f. Repeat steps for any additional accounts that apply
2. Log in to M&T Online or Mobile Banking and Enroll in M&T Direct Connect
a. Before proceeding with the following steps, be sure you have logged into M&T Online or Mobile Banking directly through mtb.com or the M&T Bank app. Visit mtb.com/peoplesbusinesslogin for more details
Note: If you were not previously enrolled in Online Banking at People’s United, enroll in M&T Online Banking beginning Tuesday, September 6, 2022
i. Go to mtb.com/enroll
ii. Select your account type
iii. Use your M&T Bank account or card information to proceed through the brief process
b. Enroll in M&T Direct Connect
i. After logging in to M&T Online Banking:
ii. Go to the Services tab
iii. Click “View All Services”
iv. Click” Enroll Now” under Direct Connect for Inuit Quicken® Software
Note: If you were not previously enrolled in Online Banking at People’s United, please call 1-800-414-9435 to enroll in M&T Direct Connect and receive a courtesy waiver of the $9.95 per month service fee.
Your prior usage at People’s United and decision to enroll in M&T Direct Connect qualifies you for a courtesy waiver of this monthly service fee. This waiver will remain ongoing for the duration of your service unless we notify you otherwise
Fees are subject to change. The M&T representative can apply this waiver to your M&T Online Banking account at the time of your enrollment in M&T Direct Connect
3. Reconnect online banking connection for your accounts
a. Choose Lists menu > Chart of Accounts
b. Right-click on an account you would like to activate and choose Edit Account
c. Select Set Up Bank Feeds on the bottom of the popup screen and select Yes in the dialog box that will appear
d. Enter M&T Bank Direct Connect in the search field and select Continue
e. Enter your M&T Bank Online Banking credentials
Note: The QuickBooks Direct Connect credentials you used prior to the conversion will not work
f. Ensure you associate the accounts to the appropriate accounts already listed in QuickBooks® . Link to your existing accounts in the drop-down options labeled Select Existing or Create New
Important: Do NOT select “Create New Account” unless you intend to add a new account to QuickBooks® . If you are presented with accounts you do not want to track in this data file, choose Do Not Add to QuickBooks®
g. After all accounts have been matched, click Next and then click Done
QuickBooks® Desktop Windows Web Connect
Great news – Customers who utilized Web Connect at People’s United Bank will be able to convert to Direct Connect at M&T at no extra charge! Direct Connect will provide you with the same interface and will allow for automatic updates (no manual updates) of financial data and access to Bill Pay and transfers. You should not experience any impact to your data through the transition.
We are working on making Web Connect available through Online Banking for Business but in the meantime, you can utilize Direct Connect as an improved alternative.
Before Disconnecting and Converting:

b. Download the latest QuickBooks® Update. Choose Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop

3. Connect online banking connection for your M&T Bank account(s)
a. Choose Lists menu > Chart of Accounts
b. Right-click on an account you would like to activate and choose Edit Account

d. Enter M&T Bank Direct Connect in the search field and select Continue
e. Enter your M&T Bank Online Banking credentials

Important: Do NOT select “Create New Account” unless you intend to add a new account to QuickBooks® . If you are presented with accounts you do not want to track in this data file, choose Do Not Add to QuickBooks®
g. After all accounts have been matched, click Next and then click Done
QuickBooks® Desktop Windows Bill Pay (Only required if you use Direct Connect in Quickbooks® to initiate Bill Payments)
Only complete these tasks if you currently initiate Bill Payments from within QuickBooks® Windows. Please note, Bill Pay services are only allowed for Checking Accounts.
Important: These tasks must be completed to avoid possible duplicate payments.
On or Before Friday, September 2 prior to 5:00 p.m. ET:
Cancel Existing Bill Payments
1. Open the Register of the account you made the payment from
2. Choose Company > Chart of Accounts
3. Double-click the proper account
4. In the register, locate the transaction to be canceled
5. Click the transaction to be deleted
6. Choose Edit > Cancel Payment
On or After Tuesday, September 6:
Re-create Your Bill Payments
If you need help re-creating payments, choose Help > QuickBooks® Help. Search for Pay a Vendor Online and follow the instructions
QuickBooks® Desktop Mac Direct Connect
Before Disconnecting and Converting:
1. Backup QuickBooks® Mac Data File & Update the Application
a. Choose File > Backup.
b. Download the latest QuickBooks® Update. Choose QuickBooks® > Check for QuickBooks® Updates.
c. Accept all new transactions into the appropriate registers (required)
On or After Tuesday, September 6:
1. Deactivate online banking connection for accounts connected to People’s United
a. Choose Lists > Chart of Accounts
b. Click the first account you would like to deactivate and choose Edit > Edit Account
c. Choose Online Settings in the Edit Account window
d. In the Online Account Information window, choose Not Enabled from the Download Transactions list and click Save
e. Click OK for any alerts or messages that may appear with the deactivation.
f. Repeat steps for any additional accounts that apply
2. Log in to M&T Online or Mobile Banking and Enroll in M&T Direct Connect
a. Before proceeding with the following steps, be sure you have logged into M&T Online or Mobile Banking directly through mtb.com or the M&T Bank app. Visit mtb.com/peoplesbusinesslogin for more details

3. Reconnect online banking connection for your M&T Bank account(s)
a. Choose Banking > Online Banking Setup
b. Type M&T Bank Direct Connect in the search field, then click Next and follow the instructions in the setup screen
c. Select Yes, my account has been activated for QuickBooks® Online Services in the Online Banking Assistant window. Click Next
d. Enter your M&T Bank Online Banking credentials
Note: The Quickbooks® Direct Connect credentials you used prior to the conversion will not work
e. For each account you wish to download into QuickBooks® , click Select and Account to connect to your existing account’s registers
f. Click Next, and then click Done
g. Repeat this step for each account that you have connected to M&T Bank
QuickBooks® Desktop Mac Web Connect
Great news – Customers who utilized Web Connect at People’s United Bank will be able to convert to Direct Connect at M&T at no extra charge! a. Choose Lists > Chart of Accounts

e. Click OK for any dialog boxes that may appear with the deactivation
f. Repeat steps for any additional accounts that apply

3. Connect online banking connection for your M&T Bank account(s)
a. Choose Banking > Online Banking Setup
b. Type M&T Bank Direct Connect in the search field, then click Next and follow the instructions in the setup screen
c. Select Yes, my account has been activated for QuickBooks® Online Services in the Online Banking Assistant window. Click Next
d. Enter your M&T Bank Online Banking credentials
Note: The QuickBooks® Direct Connect credentials you used prior to the conversion will not work
e. For each account you wish to download into QuickBooks® , click Select and Account to connect to your existing account’s registers
f. Click Next, and then click Done
g. Repeat this step for each account that you have connected to M&T Bank
QuickBooks® Online
QuickBooks® Online is a cloud-based solution offered by Intuit QuickBooks®. For additional questions, please reach out directly to Intuit QuickBooks®.
On or Before Friday, September 2 prior to 5:00 p.m. ET:
1. Complete a final transaction download
2. Complete last transaction update before the change to get all of your transaction history up to date.
3. Accept all new transactions into the appropriate registers.
On or After Tuesday, September 6:
1. Disconnect online banking connection for accounts connected to PUB.
a. Select Banking from the left column
b. Click the account you want to disconnect (PUB), then click the Pencil Icon on the corner of the account box
c. Click Edit Account Info
d. Check the box next to Disconnect this Account on Save
e. Select Save and Close
f. Repeat steps for any additional accounts that apply.
2. Log in to M&T Online or Mobile Banking
a. Before proceeding with the following steps, be sure you have logged into M&T Online or Mobile Banking directly through mtb.com or the M&T Bank app. Visit mtb.com/peoplesbusinesslogin for more details
Note: If you were not previously enrolled in Online Banking at People’s United, enroll in M&T Online Banking beginning Tuesday, September 6, 2022
i. Go to mtb.com/enroll
ii. Select your account type
iii. Use your M&T Bank account or card information to proceed through the brief process
3. Reconnect online banking connection for accounts that apply
a. On the Banking page, click Add Account in the upper-right side of the screen
b. Type M&T Bank and choose the correct option from the results.
i. M&T Business for Business customers
ii. M&T Bank for Retail customers
c. Enter your M&T Bank credentials and click Continue. Express Web Connect uses the same credentials you use online banking.
d. Provide additional information, if requested
e. Ensure you associate the accounts for your M&T Bank to the appropriate account already listed under ‘Which accounts do you want to connect?’. Choose the matching accounts in the drop-down menu.
Important: Do NOT select “+Add New” unless you intend to add a new account to QuickBooks Online. If you are presented with accounts you do not want to track in this QuickBooks Online Company, Uncheck the box next to the Account Name.
f. After all accounts have been matched, click Connect and then click Finish
4. Exclude Duplicate Transactions
a. Select Banking from the left column
b. In the For Review section, click the checkboxes for the transactions you want to exclude
c. Choose Batch Actions > Exclude Selected
